6 weeks and a smile

I've decided to start a family blog, since I so enjoy looking at other people's blogs. Plus, my sister Anna is using her blog as a type of journal for her son David's life, which I think is a great idea!

Emily Beth Forney surprised us by coming 12 days early on June 13, 2010. She weighed 6 lbs, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long.

She was a little slow to gain weight at the beginning, but it seems that we figured it out and she is now gaining well. At 5 1/2 weeks, she weighed 7 lbs, 6 ounces. She is still in newborn clothes, though they are definitely getting a tiny bit snug! She has SO many cute 0-3 month outfits that will be so much fun for her to wear (well, fun for me...I don't think she really cares either way)!

I have tried to take her on a morning walk most days, but with the sizzling Texas temps, we don't go out if it is after 8:30 am. Isn't that a little crazy? It's too hot at 9 am for a walk! She seems to enjoy being outside, and she usually is awake and alert for the entire walk. She generally does well in her carseat and in the car too. She has now been to multiple restaurants, including Uncle Julios (for her Grandpa Joe's birthday), Texas Roadhouse, El Chico, Olive Garden and Rosa's. Most of the time, she's been a pretty good baby in the restaurants, but we've learned that lunchtime is usually better for her. On Sunday, Emily was 6 weeks old! She smiled yesterday at me for the first time, and I got a little smile today as well. I just sit with her in my lap and smile and smile at her...she probably thinks I'm crazy!

She is eating about every 3 hours, and she takes several naps throughout the day. We are trying to follow an eat/play/sleep routine, and it seems to be going well for the most part so far. She generally does a 4 1/2-5 hour stretch of sleep at night, and we had two 7 hour stretches in her 5th week. I was pretty excited about that, but then she went back to her "normal" shorter sleep time. I can't complain though, because it's still nice to have a little longer time to sleep at night!

Emily has been featured on two other blogs already, so I thought I'd share the links!

Some days, Matt and I feel that we are getting the hang of caring for a baby, and other days, we feel like we have no idea what we're doing! I've been reading books and the internet for ideas, and sometimes I think I read too much and have information overload. Plus, there is always LOTS of conflicting advice and ideas on everything! It's nice to have friends and my sister with babies, so I can call them and ask lots of questions.

Emily and I have been lucky to have lots of visitors! She has met all of her aunts and uncles, has gotten to spend time with both sets of grandparents, and has had several visits from my good friends and their babies!

Here are some pictures of her first 6 weeks:
